The dissertation presented results of Sutugin’s experiments on dogs with transfusions of blood kept in cold storage for up to seven days, comparing the effects of transfusing “whole blood” and “blood serum” (Sutugin 1865). In the 1870s, physicians in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, and other university centers continued animal experimentation and occasionally performed transfusions of both human and animal blood to their patients. 5 For the next quarter century, blood transfusions in Russia were almost completely abandoned.
1 Very early on, the boy demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for learning. Despite the family’s strained financial situation (Alexander had Chapter 3 X 34 X five siblings), at the age of thirteen, he was sent—on a state stipend—to a classical gymnasium in Tula, a large industrial center south of Moscow. Upon graduation from the gymnasium with the highest honors—a gold medal—in the fall of 1892, he enrolled in the Moscow University School of Natural Sciences. Alexander was interested in mathematics, physics, and biology, but he was unable to complete his studies.

Perhaps Zelenogorskii’s retirement from Kharkov University in the spring of 1899 (exactly at the time when Bogdanov completed his tract) played a role. More likely, Bogdanov’s revolutionary work interfered with his philosophical pursuits. In November 1899, Bogdanov was again arrested for spreading revolutionary propaganda among workers. After several months in prison, he was exiled to Kaluga, a provincial town not far from Tula.
